Alsea Economy

Historically, the people of the Alsea Valley have made their living from the land. Logging, farming, and related agricultural jobs supported the vast majority of local families. Today, there are almost as many different types of work supporting Alseans, as there are people!

Some folks still work “in the woods”, raise some cattle, and cut hay off their land, but just as many people commute outside the valley. Some of the larger employers include the U.S. Forest Service, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Oregon State University, Good Samaritan Hospital, Corvallis and Philomath School Districts, plus municipal, county, and state employment.

Quite a number of residents have created new ways to support themselves here in Alsea. From telecommuting and on-line businesses to small farm and service operations, to artisans and entrepreneurs, Alsea is home to a number of successful ventures. Examples include:
